Flatten uneven shower walls with less guesswork and less wasted material.

Uneven studs and out-of-plumb framing can slow shower installation before the first tile is set. The Built With Foam Wall Flattening Shim Kit provides a repeatable way to correct framing irregularities before installing compatible foam shower boards. Measure the correction needed and select from seven color-coded foam shim thicknesses rather than repeatedly cutting improvised spacers.

Each Original Foam Shim Kit includes over 900 foam shims in seven thicknesses and a depth gauge. A kit typically covers approximately 3–5 showers, depending on framing conditions.

Why Choose Built With Foam Wall Shims?

  • Less prep work: Select predetermined shim thicknesses instead of repeatedly cutting makeshift spacers.
  • Less material waste: Use the thickness needed instead of building up multiple layers of scrap material.
  • Flatter shower walls: Correct recessed or uneven framing before installing foam shower boards.
  • Measure before installation: The included depth gauge helps identify the appropriate thickness.
  • Easy identification: Seven color-coded sizes range from 1/16" to 1/2".
  • Refillable system: Purchase individual Original Foam shim thicknesses as needed.

What's Included in the Built With Foam Shim Kit?

  • Over 900 foam wall shims
  • Seven color-coded thicknesses
  • One Built With Foam depth gauge

How to Install Built With Foam Wall Shims

  1. Inspect the framing: Find bowed studs, recessed areas and inconsistent wall planes.
  2. Measure: Use the included depth gauge to determine the thickness required at each location.
  3. Mark: Identify each shim location and the corresponding size or color.
  4. Attach: Position the foam shims using compatible construction adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Built With Foam identifies Loctite PL 3X Premium as a preferred adhesive; confirm compatibility with your materials.
  5. Verify: Recheck flatness, plumb and alignment before installing the foam shower boards.

See the existing Built With Foam installation video on this product page for a visual demonstration. Always follow the selected foam shower-board and adhesive manufacturers' installation requirements.

Built With Foam Shims vs. Wet Shimming

Built With Foam shims provide predetermined thicknesses attached to framing before wall board installation. Wet shimming uses an approved setting material during board installation where permitted. Which approach is appropriate depends on the chosen shower-board system; do not assume that either method is approved for every board.

Frequently Asked Questions

If shower pan from Home Depot is installed already above the lip of shower pan is were I would begin the built with foam ?

TileTools

Yes, you can use the Built With Foam shims after the shower pan is installed. The shims attach to the wall framing to bring the studs into a flat, even plane; they do not go on top of the shower pan or its lip.

If the pan’s flange projects beyond the studs, the wall may need to be shimmed so the wall board clears the flange. The exact placement depends on your pan and wall board, so follow their installation instructions for how the board and waterproofing meet the flange.
